User Cases

Asset Potentials

Utilizing IsoSmart™ to monitor asset potentials allows users to schedule and capture data at any time of the day/year. Installing IsoSmart™ at test stations, for example, can allow monitoring of asset’s potential to ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards and practices. Furthermore, utilizing the capabilities of IsoSmart™ to schedule precise readings allows users to capture readings during specific “events” or simply take I-Off readings. No special equipment or tools are needed for installation. Utilizing a permanent reference electrode allows operators to quickly install IsoSmart™ at existing test location(s) in minutes. Proving the ease and our “designed for use” in the IsoSmart™ unit. Monitoring parameters and alarms can be enabled and checked at any time utilizing the IsoSmart™ dashboard, your hub for all your IsoSmart™ unit data collection.

Instant Off (I-Off)

Capturing I-Off potential of an asset offers users valuable insight on the effectiveness of their CP system. Though, what is the standard practice for capturing I-Off values? Having a technician test with their hand-held voltmeter of unknown brand and accuracy, visually “choose” a value that is displayed on the voltmeter while interruptions are occurring, and document. While the next time the same technician may not take the same readings and use a different practice all together. Does this sound familiar and/or confusing? Well, it is… this is what was observed by GPT Engineers when out in the field. So why is such a repetitive and necessary process treated so “randomly”? GPT aims to not only streamline these processes but standardize the methods. GPT has seen firsthand how slight changes in reading I-Off values greatly affects the measurements which dictate whether the asset is within compliance. Allowing IsoSmart™ to take its reading and scheduling IsoSmart to take scheduled readings during interruptions will take out all the guesswork and inconsistencies in the process. Furthermore, all the data is sent and stored on the IsoSmart™ Dashboard, allowing users to review or recall data at any time.

Isolation (including FIK’s, MIJ’s, Casings, etc.)

Initial designs for IsoSmart™ were to just monitor isolation of an isolation joint. Through much research, development, and conversations with customers it was apparent that a unit that only monitored isolation… industry needed something more! Through all our R&D, testing, and advancements of IsoSmart™ technology and monitoring capabilities, IsoSmart™ utilizes its high precision reading capabilities to give customers TRMS readings in which allow for isolation detection. IsoSmart™ utilizes internal isolation circuits to compare two inputs to the same reference while still maintaining a total impedance >10MΩ. This takes out all the guess work on installation as well as removing IR drop as an obstacle to determine isolation effectiveness.

Bond Current

Monitoring bonds, whether they’re critical or not, provide technicians critical information on their CP System. IsoSmart™ is designed with a dedicated current monitoring circuit which includes its own shunt, thus removing the need to use external shunts. The high precision shunt utilized in IsoSmart™ as well as TRMS capabilities allows for highly accurate readings for technicians to see the magnitude and the direction of current through their bond. This dedicated current monitoring circuit is also designed to accept wire size up to 6AWG and is rated to 40A (±20A).

AC/DC TRMS Monitoring & Signal Processing

Throughout our research and discussions with technicians, there was always a topic that got brought up, AC monitoring. This piqued our interest and took us back to the “drawing board”. GPT is extremely proud of all the work, testing, and study that has gone into IsoSmart™ and its ability to measure and monitor AC Voltage and/or current. Utilizing IsoSmart’s™ high precision reading capabilities, not only can AC be detected, IsoSmart™ can detect and isolate AC and DC in one signal input. No need to change connections and setting of your IsoSmart™ to take advantage of this feature. Further analysis utilized by GPT Engineers allows signal processing which provides customers a breakdown of voltage and current amplitudes with respect to their frequency. This analysis gives technician invaluable insight on their asset(s) by showing how much DC or AC is present and possible sources, by seeing the frequency of each magnitude.
